Dear Mr. Ancheta,

To: Janice Aria
From: Hector Cho
Date: Thursday, February 4
Subject: Anaheim conference
Attachment: April_9_information

Hi, Janice,

I’m happy to report that most of our staff will be attending the medical conference in Anaheim in April. We should coordinate our attendance as a group so that we can take advantage of the wide range of topics that will be covered.

I have attached a list of the presentations that will be given on the first day. I found them on the conference Web site. The lists for days two and three will be available next week. It sounds like these sessions will be useful for everyone on staff. We should arrange for at least one person to attend each presentation so we can share highlights with each other later.

I also wanted to let you know that I reserved a block of hotel rooms for us at a group rate. I haven’t made transportation arrangements yet, but I’ll keep you updated.

Best,
Hector

Hector,

I like your suggestion of coordinating our conference attendance. I can create an informal sign-up document so that everyone can get an idea of what sessions are available and we can make sure we cover all of them.

I appreciate the information from the Web site. I didn’t know it was already available. I definitely want to attend the session on dealing with ligament injuries. Once we get the schedule for the additional conference sessions, I’ll send it out to the team, together with the attendance sign-up sheet.

It’s great that you were able to get that group discount. Conferences like this are a big expense, but your efforts will certainly save us money.

Thanks,
Janice

Questions 196-200 refer to the following reviews of a book.

An Unexpected Plot Twist for a Seasoned Mystery Novelist

Fans of Delia Ramiro’s mystery novels may be surprised when opening her new book. While Ms. Ramiro’s novels usually feature crafty detectives and suspenseful plots interwoven with lengthy descriptions of mouthwatering meals, The Vanishing Plate is all about the recipes.

This attractive cookbook gives detailed instructions for making the many dishes featured in Ms. Ramiro’s fiction, such as the lentil soup served by Derek Donne at the end of The Alpine Enigma, the debut novel that was published while Ms. Ramiro was still a university student.

“My literary agent, Bernice Holm, wanted me to write another international thriller,” Ms. Ramiro said recently in an interview. “But readers kept asking me about the cuisine in my novels. They wanted to know how they could make it themselves!”

For Ms. Ramiro, the new book is not as big a departure as it may seem. “As a child, I read cookbooks like they were novels,” she said. “For me back then, The Saffron Table was as exciting as any adventure story.”

When asked whether she expects the new book to be as successful as her previous one, The Garnet Butterfly, Ms. Ramiro had a quick answer. “It may not sell as many copies, but people will want to keep it for years,” she said. “The images in the book are works of art all on their own. Even if you don’t make my version of chocolate soufflé, you’ll be enchanted by the photograph of it.”

Hudson Keita Reviews The Vanishing Plate

It would seem that everyone is a chef these days. So far this year no fewer than 20 cookbooks by celebrities—actors, writers, and athletes—have hit bookstore shelves. Fortunately, Delia Ramiro’s The Vanishing Plate is one of those rare celebrity cookbooks that can hold its own alongside those by professional chefs. This handsomely produced volume, featuring photographs by Selda Solberg and a foreword by award-winning chef Lukas Fogt, features over 100 creative and tantalizing recipes. Despite the puzzling title, the recipes themselves are clearly written and generously detailed. If only the book were not priced so exorbitantly ($50 for a cookbook?), I would say that it should become a staple in the kitchen of every home cook.

THE SOUTHWESTERNER MONTHLY

Book Review: Delia Ramiro’s The Vanishing Plate

Delia Ramiro’s The Vanishing Plate is not for the faint of heart. Inspired by scenes in the novelist’s acclaimed mysteries and thrillers, the recipes are significantly more complicated than those in your typical gourmet cookbook. Most of Ramiro’s recipes assume the reader is proficient in mid-level cooking techniques, and a few recipes would likely be attempted only by cooks with professional experience. If you are the ideal reader who is up to the challenge, however, the book will not disappoint you. All the recipes are innovative—not one failed to surprise me in one way or another—and they produce dishes that I believe would impress even the most discriminating diner. That said, the book is not without its faults. In addition to a hefty price tag, it devotes too much space to the history of the ingredients. While such information can be interesting, I would have preferred a trimmer, more concise book that showcases the recipes themselves and is easier to handle in the kitchen.
